There are managers who tend to refuse SEO (search engine optimization) because they fear of making mistakes. Which one? They can’t say for sure, but they are still reluctant to the idea. There is a cynical inside joke that states that Google hates SEO, but that’s just a myth.

Let’s talk technical for a moment.

The techniques used for search engine optimization are known in the hat jargon: black hat SEO, white hat SEO, and gray hat SEO. For does who are new in the area or just curious about the topic, let us clear the air for you. The term of hat refers to a tactic; we are not in a Harry Potter movie, no one wears hats here unless they want to.

Black SEO

When SEO experts talk about Black Hat SEO they are referring to a sum of disapproved practice that increases a page’s ranking in a search engine result page (SERP). These practices are against the search engine’s terms of service and can ban the site.

According to WordStream, the Black Hat SEO tactics are:

  • Content Automation
  • Doorway Pages
  • Hidden Text or Links
  • Keyword Stuffing
  • Reporting a Competitor
  • Sneaky Redirects
  • Cloaking

Also, according to them, the Black Hat SEO Techniques are:

  • Link Manipulation – Buying links, advertorials, and link schemes
  • Article Spinning
  • Link Schemes
  • Link Farms
  • Link Wheels
  • Link Networks
  • Rich Snippet Markup Spam
  • Automated Queries to Google
  • Creating pages, subdomains, or domains with duplicate content
  • Pages with malicious behavior, such as phishing, viruses, trojans, and other malware.

A black hat is the unethical form of SEO and it will never bring benefits to users. If you wonder why are they used, the answer is simple: the tactic works until the site is caught and banned.

If you plan to build a lasting business you should not use it.

White Hat SEO –  100 Percent Pure

On the other hand, White Hat SEO it is about using optimization strategies, techniques and tactics that focus on a human audience opposed to search engines and completely follows search engine rules and policies. Also, it is about focusing on relevancy and organic ranking on Google pages. That means that you are pure and following the rules.

White Hat SEO techniques, according to Webopedia are:

  • Keywords and keyword analysis
  • Backlinking
  • Link building to improve link popularity
  • Writing content for human readers

Going white is the safe approach, but is rare because waiting for a natural link profile to build is a long day in the desert. That is why the gray hat is so used.

Grey Hat SEO

Grey Hat SEO includes a vast, heterogeneous body of “below the radar” optimization methods. This tactic takes advantage of the weaknesses in the ranking algorithms and it’s used to help speed up results.

There are several SEO tactics that correspond to Grey Hat SEO:

  • Paid links or link swapping
  • Duplicate content
  • Cloaking
  • Mild keyword stuffing

Even though Grey Hay tactics are not usually as severe as those for Black, there can still be penalties.

Last, but not least, SEO tactics implemented in a professional way can generate significant results and can make the website visible in the online world.
